What We Learned From the Historic Windstorm
December 15th was one for the record books - Wildfires, tornadoes, rain, hail, sustained winds over 50mph and gusts up to 90mph, you name it, and it hit Kansas that day. Most have described it as a scene from a sci-fi film.
Many of us are still recovering, and unfortunately, some will never fully recover from this day. Like most major weather events that cause large financial losses, many are wondering what they could have had in place to reduce their loss. The answer for most people is simple: Matching of Undamaged Siding and Roofing.
It’s abnormal to have a roof deemed a “total loss” due to wind damage. And most damage we saw from that day was so minimal it didn’t warrant a claim. Out of the claims we did process, some were partial losses to the roof, and some were total losses.
But how do you replace a portion of a roof? That is left to the roofers to decide. Sometimes after a part of the roof is replaced, it will look completely fine as if no damage occurred at all. While other times, the new shingles stick out like a sore thumb, which is less than ideal. Many companies are now offering “Matching of Undamaged Siding and Roofing” endorsements that would cover the full replacement (up to your limit) of siding or roofing should only a portion of your home is damaged.
After speaking with my Travelers adjuster, Patrick, he said it’s much more common to see this with siding. A hail storm could roll through and smoke one side of a home while the other sides remain undamaged. This was the first major wind storm where this was more applicable to roofing material.
How much does this endorsement usually cost? I have seen this run anywhere from $40/year to just shy of $300/year. This amount depends on:
1. Your home’s location
2. The type of shingle currently on your roof
3. The build of your roof
There are always potential gaps in your insurance policies, particularly on homeowners policies. The insurance industry and coverages are also consistently changing. Reviewing your policies with your agent and discussing potential concerns can help you reduce your risk.
